The Last of Us Part 2 set for February 2020 launch

Nearly three years after it was announced, The Last of Us Part 2 finally has a concrete release date. Naughty Dog and Sony will launch the highly anticipated sequel Feb. 21, 2020, on PlayStation 4, the companies announced Tuesday during the September episode of State of Play.

The game will arrive almost seven years after its predecessor, The Last of Us, which debuted in June 2013 on PlayStation 3 and was ported to PS4 a little over a year later. The Last of Us Part 2 takes place five years after the original game and stars one of its protagonists, Ellie, who’s now a young woman rather than a teenager.

A new trailer that debuted during State of Play showed off Joel, the main playable character from The Last of Us, for the first time in the sequel. The years haven’t been kind to the man who decided to prevent Ellie from being sacrificed for a potential cure to a world-ending plague — it’s only been five years, but it looks like the interim was much longer for Joel. As for Ellie, we see that she appears to be out for vengeance, and Joel won’t let her go it alone. Joel’s younger brother, Tommy, also shows up in the trailer. And it begins with the aftermath of her first kiss with Dina, which we saw in the E3 2018 trailer.
